Life in municipal work
Stefan Dedominicus
1. What is your role and what does a typical day look like for you?
In a typical day, I manage the Children’s Services budget and oversee funding calculations and reconciliations for licensed child care operators and contracted agencies. I also lead child care expansion projects, coordinating with the Ministry of Education and local planning and legal teams.
2. How did you find your way into municipal work?
With a background in business, I began my career supporting operations at a large logistics firm before transitioning to the City of Brantford. I now apply my experience in financial management and business processes to social services, helping ensure municipal resources are used effectively to support the community.
3. What part of your work has the biggest impact on your community?
The most significant impact comes from leading the expansion of our licensed child care system to improve access for families. By creating more spaces, I support parents in joining the workforce or pursuing education, while also contributing to healthy child development and a stronger community.
4. What is one moment, project, or accomplishment you’re proud of?
I led the City of Brantford through the transition to the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care cost-based funding formula. This included working closely with licensed providers to translate a complex provincial mandate into a clear and practical plan.
5. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your job?
People may be surprised by how directly this work impacts the broader community. Affordable child care supports children’s development, reduces financial stress for families, and enables parents to pursue work or education, strengthening the local economy.
6. What do you enjoy most about serving your municipality?
I enjoy seeing the impact of our work in my own community. Hearing friends and family share their experiences with child care, and knowing our efforts are improving access and affordability, makes the work especially meaningful.
7. What are you looking forward to in the year ahead?
The City of Brantford is on track to open more than 500 new child care spaces in 2026. It will be exciting to see these projects move from planning to completion, knowing they will improve access and affordability for families.
8. Anything else you’d like people to know about your role, your team, or your municipality?
This work is about more than managing budgets. It is about building a child care system that grows with the community. By strengthening access and sustainability, we are supporting families and investing in the long-term success of the entire community.
