Life in municipal work
Justin Pulleyblank
1. What is your role and what does a typical day look like for you?
I currently hold the position of Supervisor of Water Distribution and am responsible for the maintenance and operation of the water distribution system in the City of Windsor. A typical day involves managing all activities related to maintaining system appurtenances, including valves, hydrants, watermains, infrastructure locates, and customer service issues, while ensuring the highest quality water possible for residents of the City of Windsor.
2. How did you find your way into municipal work?
Early out of school, I was unsure of the career path I wanted to take. I started in an entry level position with the utility and soon found myself very interested in becoming a Water Distribution Operator.
3. What part of your work has the biggest impact on your community?
The biggest impact, in my view, is providing a level and quality of water that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also safe and reliable for the community.
4. What is one moment, project, or accomplishment you’re proud of?
I am very proud that I was given an opportunity as a young man to start in this industry, and that 27 years later I now represent and advocate for our membership as President of the Ontario Municipal Water Association.
5. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your job?
One of the biggest surprises is that most people are unaware this career even exists. I think we need to do a better job educating the public about the career opportunities available in this field.
6. What do you enjoy most about serving your municipality?
I enjoy interacting with the community and knowing that we provide a valuable service to residents. It is easy to take for granted that clean, reliable water is always available.
7. What are you looking forward to in the year ahead?
I am excited to continue our work in the community, including upgrading infrastructure, maintaining the highest water quality, and delivering these services safely and efficiently.
8. Anything else you’d like people to know about your role, your team, or your municipality?
Water, wastewater, and stormwater operators provide communities across Ontario and Canada with exceptional service. These men and women go above and beyond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As President of OMWA, I am proud to advocate for these professionals and highlight the exceptional work they do every day.
