Life in municipal work

1. What is your role and what does a typical day look like for you?
I provide specialized technical support in traffic operations and safety, including the installation, maintenance, and operation of traffic control devices. My work also involves conducting traffic engineering studies, performing detailed analyses, and supporting inventory and database systems to improve operational efficiency.
2. How did you find your way into municipal work?
I completed a three-year Transportation Engineering Technology program at Mohawk College, which included co-op placements. One of those placements was with the Town of Halton Hills, where I now work full-time.
3. What part of your work has the biggest impact on your community?
My work directly supports public safety by ensuring traffic control devices are properly installed and maintained. These efforts help reduce collisions, protect pedestrians and drivers, and create a safer transportation environment for the community.
4. What is one moment, project, or accomplishment you’re proud of?
I take pride in conducting traffic studies and evaluating school zone safety concerns. This work involves developing data-driven recommendations to improve safety for vulnerable road users, especially students.
5. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about your job?
One often overlooked aspect of this role is the amount of interaction with residents, particularly when addressing concerns related to traffic and safety.
6. What do you enjoy most about serving your municipality?
I value the opportunity to improve safety for all road users, with a strong focus on protecting vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
7. What are you looking forward to in the year ahead?
I am looking forward to building my understanding of community needs and taking a more active role in transportation projects. This includes planning and implementing safety improvements and working closely with other departments and external partners.
8. Anything else you’d like people to know about your role, your team, or your municipality?
The Town of Halton Hills offers a highly collaborative and supportive work environment. I have received strong support from my team and colleagues across departments, which fosters knowledge sharing and helps us work together to achieve shared goals.
